Holden and the Phonies opening at some stupid place and other items of note

Last week I shared a link to a new organization called Canadian Women in the Literary Arts, which I joined, and you may want to consider joining as well, female, male or other – it’s important for all of us.

The Vancouver Sun has a great write up, check it out here. Also see this write up in the Quill & Quire blog.

Along those lines, I recently came across an excellent TED Talk from Megan Kamerick titled “Women should represent women in media.” Watch it. This stuff is so important, and there’s no reason we should continue allowing these issues to remain neglected.

Another round up:

  • Rebecca Joines Schinsky shares “20 Awesome (Fake) Literary Band Names” over on Book Riot. It’s a toss up between Holden and the Phonies and Proust and the Madeleines for my favourite. Check out the comments for more great ideas.
  • Arc Poetry Magazine has posted a wonderful interview by Rob Winger with George Murray, “Beautiful Chaos.” I adored Glimpse, and look forward to reading Whiteout.
  • Ploughshares…shares…what those blurbs on the book’s cover really mean, decoding “Blurbese.”
  • Chronicle of a reticent clack offers detailed instructions on “How to Open a Book.”
  • Sheila Heti answers five questions from Kyle Dupont for This. Great advice re: rejections, what else can you do?
  • Publishers Weekly posted a lengthy alphabetical list of publishers on Twitter, with their handles, follow count, but, unfortunately, no direct links to the accounts. For those who didn’t make the cut, some commentators have added omissions in the comments section.
  • Over on The Rumpus Roxane Gay shows where things stand in terms of reviews, reviewers and race.
  • Behold: the Pizza Necronomicon.

Happy Monday, kids.
