I will present a paper titled “Commemorating Community: St Kunibert’s Office of the Dead” at the From Parchment to Pixels colloquium.

From Parchment to Pixels is a colloquium sponsored by the University of Guelphโ€™s McLaughlin Library, the College of Arts, and The Humanities Interdisciplinary Collaboration (THINC) Lab.

I will present a paper titled “Commemorating Community: St Kunibert’s Office of the Dead.” The office of the dead consists of several prayers and orations to be recited during funerals and for regular commemoration of deceased members of the local community. This particular Office of the Dead was donated to this collegiate church in Cologne by Johannes Ehrlich of Andernach, archbishop of Trier, in 1487. Regular commemoration of the dead was an act of piety and was an important means by which the living could continue to honour those they cared for.

The colloquium will be followed by the launch of Illuminating Life: Manuscript Pages from Middle Ages, an exhibition featuring nine original manuscripts from the loan and two incunables (early printed books) from Archival and Special Collections at 4:00 pm.

From Parchment to Pixels will take place on Thursday, 12 March 2020 from 12:00 to 6:00 pm in the Robert Whitelaw Room in McLaughlin Library at the University of Guelph, in Guelph, Ontario.

This event is free and open to all, though an RSVP to Janine Magilsen is requested by Tuesday, 10 March 2020.
